Rishis and Gods

We had a killer class today in Improv. Before class starts, there's often a collection of people zipping thru a variety of personal warm ups and stretches. This morning, no one was moving really. We were all just sitting there, sluggish and stuporous. Tim asked, "Should we do a Yin yoga class then? Lying around, doing very little?" A couple of people asked for a gentle class. So we did the Rishi poses. It was a blast. I don't get to go that often, but I've never seen him do some of these poses in this class. In fact, I've seen him refuse to do a couple of them when they were specifically requested, like durvasasana and viranchyasana. we didn't do all the rishi poses but here's the list of the ones i remember doing

viswamitrasana
viswamitrasana variation
vasisthasana
vasisthasana variation
kasyapasana
bhairavasana
durvasasana
koundinyasana A
koundinyasana B
astavakrasana
ardha matsyendrasana
marichyasana C
marichyasana D
marichyasana F
poorna matsyendrasana
viranchyasana A
viranchyasana B
hanumanasana
supta trivikrmasana
trivikrmasana
natarajasana

Great photos okrgr. Why do you call them Rishi poses?

okrgr said...

they are poses named after great hindu sages or rishis. tim will say, "oh, not doing correctly. now viswamitra (or whomever the pose was named after) will be angry with you. do again!"

i was thinking about the class last night and realized that i need to amend my post to read "we attempted to do the rishi poses"

did i miss the sarcasm? HOW is this a gentle class?

okrgr said...

my experienc with this improv class has been that when they ask for an easy time, heat is brought. some of the best classes i can remember were when some snivelers asked for a restorative class

Ah, got you. Thanks. Tim has talked about a couple of those poses in his workshops here (in Cols.) but I didn't know they were all named after wise sages. They look fiendishly hard.

okrgr said...

hence my revisement to "attempted" to do

okrgr said...

did give me some empathy for boodi though

okrgr said...

just to be clear, i empathize better with anyone doing third, my wife, the others in my studio, and those, like boodiba, who have newly been given a bunch of these poses. seeing them done by others is one thing. doing them in a class one after rhe other is another. this was one of the first times i've done some of these poses and certainly the first to do them all together. so i have an even greater appreciation for anyone who does this every day.

what about squirrels who can't do pincha after 3 years? any empathy there or just flat out pity?

okrgr said...

i don't accept that you can't do it

hey okrgr:

here's the camp that my friend runs...

elite lacrosse

I think we also have some underground jai alai in the boston area, too!

Good lord I can actually manage some of those asanas ! Personally third series is not a place that I ever actually envisage reaching so too share your respect, mind you I am only just playing around the outskirts of 2nd so have a great deal of respect for those who are sticking their legs behind their heads on a daily basis.

acorn, thank you for keeping the faith in this P.E. nerd.

oh, and skelly, this may be the first time that I've been respected for sticking my legs behind my head daily. Thanks. :)

Oooh this looks like a great class. But imagine if you were expected to do it four mornings in a row!!! Aaaargh!!!

okrgr said...

i'd take that offer in a heart beat.

in what i do now, there's things, like karanda, that i have doubts about my ever being able to do.

in the rishi class, the poses i couldn't do, i could almost do them. i could do them well enough to tell that i was capable if i just did them enough.

that class was one of the funnest ones i've done. it was challenging but do-able, for the most part. i'd do it every day in an encinitas minute

okrgr said...

well, maybe not viranchyasana A, final portion (lifted up like in urdvha kukkutasana). i can't do UK B so for viranchy A, i don't know that i could get the one leg up onto my arm and still keep the other one behind my head. i didn't come close enough in class to sense that it was in my range so, out of that list, that one may be my waterloo

Anonymous said...

In viranchyasana A, one foot is visible. Where did his other foot go? Just curious.

okrgr said...

it's in lotus

Hey is that Paul Grilley doing vasisthasana variation? Looks alot like him.

What a freakin crimnal, That's not yin yoga! Well maybe he holds it for 10 minutes.

"maybe he holds it for 10 minutes"

Okay, now THAT is hilarious!

dr. acorn, where have you been? I have posted my ass and everything, and I go over to susan's blog and there you are talking about wieners and appetizers. wtf? Hey, also, I have a doctor question. You know I have a pectus excavatum, si? Well, every now and then (okay, once a day) i get this clicking in my chest which sounds like bone moving against bone. It seems to becoming from the bottom of my sternum. WTF is it? Any ideas?

crankyhausfrau said...

i never though of pigs in blankets as appetizing. i mean appetizers. they were a meal as a child.
um, and along the lines of pectus excavatum (thank you again, wikipedia), is it possible to break off one's xiphoid process?

Anonymous said...

wow, that's weird. i don't know. And Dr. A is unresponsive. I've always thought that if I ever needed CPR, I'd pretty much be toasted because there is nothing to press down on, although you can get some pretty great farting noises out of it with your hand, and I've always enjoyed using it as a soap dish in the bath.
Anyway, pigs in a blanket? weren't you raised jewish? isn't that treife?

i'm a travelin'. escorting the laxboy out to the hinterlands of vermont for a lacrosse camp. these boys love their war gamez

striking things about these east coast places: they're very green. very, very green. the states are also really small. and they have this stuff over here that they call rain. my son isn't too familiar with it and thought it was kind of neat. "can we get rain too dad?" no son. we only get to have sun. "aww, that's no fair. when can we get rain?" shut up and go back to playing video games on the Tv at $12 an hour. i have to go wash all your filthy clothes from the camp last week.

at any rate, i haven't been around connections that much the last few days. plus, you all were being all serious and everything so i fell asleep.

we need you around to keep us from getting serious. please help us.

okrgr said...

i was gonna but i can't handle that advent stuff. and i'm not good at lost causes either. i'm need stuff to work off of. that heady stuff...., i can't go any where with it. i do better with chest deformity farts. the world needs more of those.
