Damnation and Ruin

Jake's team lost. These guys haven't lost a game to anyone in two years. The normal coach didn't even make it to the game. Must have been busy. One of the high schools kids who helps as the assistant ended up doing the coaching. He played everyone pretty equally, which means he didn't play them to win. On the bright side, it's one less thing for Kiran to have to lug him to next week. The serious lacrosse team is starting up their practices now, so, in a way, it's good to be done with that other team. Doing three teams at once would have been too much, even for Jake the lax fanatic.

Hope he wasn't too disappointed. My son crashed and burned in his fencing tournament yesterday, but he wasn't too upset about it.

My husband coaches my daughter's soccer team and while he has to play everyone equally (it's U8 recreational), he has come up with rotations that allow them to win by containing weaker players in certain positions, without their knowing that's what he's doing. He cracks me up because he's so serious about it. The girls are happier when they win, though!

i'm at work so i missed the game. i was having to call the wife to see how it all went. but I doubt it was the end of the world. he's had enough losing in his life to date that he can put it in the right context. his last year of soccer they went defeated!

how'd he get into fencing? I read an article about cross training for goalies and one of the better college goalies cited doing fencing as the single best thing he had done outside of lacrosse to help him play

Well, you know, boys seem to naturally gravitate toward swords! A friend of his was into fencing, and he begged me to sign him up. It's been good for him. He's not naturally athletic (neither am I ;-) but he has a blast doing it. More fun than soccer was for him -- he would get distracted and end up picking dandelions on the field. In fencing, it's just you and the other guy, so you have to pay attention.

You can check out fencing.net -- I think there's a search by zip code feature.
